Best Bottles for Breastfed Babies

The Truth About Baby Bottles

Parents often ask me, "What's the best bottle for a breastfed baby?"

The truth is that there isn't one perfect bottle for every baby. Rather than focusing on marketing claims, I encourage families to focus on finding a bottle that supports a comfortable, efficient feeding and allows baby to maintain a deeper latch.

My 3-Step Bottle Selection Checklist

1. Look at the Nipple Shape First

When choosing a bottle, I pay more attention to the nipple than the bottle itself.Look for a nipple with a gradual slope from tip to base rather than a short or abruptly widened nipple. This often allows baby to take more of the nipple into their mouth and achieve the wider, deeper latch pattern we look for during feeding.

2. Start with a Slow-Flow Nipple

Many babies do best with the slowest flow nipple available, especially if they are also breastfeeding.A slower flow helps baby stay in control of the feeding, take breaks when needed, and avoid developing a preference for a faster, easier flow.

3. Watch Your Baby, Not the Brand

The "best" bottle is the one your baby feeds comfortably from.Signs a bottle is working well:

✓ Comfortable latch

✓ Minimal leaking

✓ Relaxed feeding

✓ Able to pause and take breaks

✓ No coughing, choking, or gulping

Bottles I Commonly Recommend:

These bottles tend to have nipple shapes that better support the deeper latch pattern I look for when helping families transition between breast and bottle.

Pigeon

Lansinoh

Evenflo Balance+

Bottles I Recommend With Caution:

Every baby is different, but some popular bottles may not be my first choice because the nipple shape can encourage a shallower latch pattern for some babies.

• Philips Avent Natural Response

• Dr. Brown's

That doesn't mean these bottles never work. If your baby is feeding comfortably, growing well, and meeting your feeding goals, there may be no reason to switch.

What Matters More Than the Brand

Before spending money trying every bottle on the shelf, focus on:

✓ A gradual-sloped nipple shape

✓ A slow-flow nipple

✓ Paced bottle feeding

✓ Watching your baby's feeding cues

Remember: how a bottle is used is often just as important as which bottle you choose.
